SUMMARY OF RESULTS

The challenge

The product portfolio of configurable control cabinets at Siemens is extremely complex and varied. More than 90 enclosures and 2,000 accessories present a challenge for every configuration. In the search for experts for 3D solutions and configurators, Siemens turned to Plan Software, an N4 company. Not only Siemens sales staff, but also the customers themselves should be able to configure complete control cabinets. But the more complex the task, the more error-prone the entire process, which is why visual feedback is almost essential for this task. Normal configurators (without a 3D component) lack this comprehensive control instance. If the process chain is not continuous and data has to be entered again and again, the susceptibility to errors increases once again. But that’s not all: if a customer wanted to have cutouts in the side walls for example, he had to send a paper sketch to the factory “in the same way”, which also meant more work for all involved.

The solution

To implement the project, Plan Software worked closely with the “Siemens Competence Center for Configuration” and the “Siemens Infrastructure & Cities Sector – Low and Medium Voltage Division – Low Voltage & Products Group” as the responsible service provider. Together with our technology partner KiM and other Siemens departments, six locations were the peak of an agile project. The 3D switch cabinet configurator, which was seamlessly integrated into the existing system infrastructure, simplifies the configuration for both sales staff and customers. The final product is realistically visualized, can be viewed from all sides, and can be adapted to suit the customer’s wishes, including color design and special requests such as cutouts. The control cabinet configurator was introduced during the SPS IPC Drives in November 2018 in Nürnberg and officially launched at the Hannover Messe in April 2019.
