Presented for People GmbH / 4 plus 1 Konzerte GmbH are the organisers of the two largest music festivals in Saarland. The Rocco del Schlacko, which has been sold out for years, attracts over 24,000 music enthusiasts from all over Germany and the surrounding area to the quiet town of Püttlingen every year, where world-class national and international rock and pop bands gather. The Electromagnetic - awarded as "Europe's best new festival 2012" - transforms the World Cultural Heritage site "Völklinger Hütte" every year with over 10,000 visitors and hip electronic music into a total work of art.
Tickets printed out by both the organiser and the visitor themselves will be used for entrance to the major events. In order to filter out forgeries, multiple printed and blocked tickets, a system was needed to verify the tickets. A further complicating factor is that the venues are located on open ground. The ticket scanners must therefore be portable, self-sufficient and fail-safe. In addition, the scanners are often used by untrained users who need to quickly and easily recognize whether a ticket is valid or not.
In order to avoid the cost- and time-intensive development of a prototype, we took a different path.
Based on a Raspberry Pi and compatible components, we created a hardware platform that was ideally
suited to solving the problem. The system is powerful enough to perform the required processes. With
limited resources. The result is battery-powered scan boxes that work even without a network connection
and that synchronize with each other as soon as a network connection is established to keep up with the
latest updates. Even inexperienced users can easily use the scanners, as they display the status of the
ticket through color, text and acoustic messages. With the help of the mobile scanners, the check-in
process could be distributed across the festival area, shortening the registration process for visitors
and significantly improving their festival experience.
